Nyungwe National Park

Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically rich montane rainforests. Located in the southwest of Rwanda, Nyungwe is a true natural sanctuary, stretching over 1,019 square kilometers of lush, untouched wilderness.

Nyungwe is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity. It hosts more than 13 primate species, making it one of the best primate destinations in East Africa. The highlight for many visitors is the chimpanzee trekking, where you have the chance to observe these highly social and intelligent animals in their natural habitat. The forest is also home to L’Hoest’s monkeys, colobus monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, and more.

Bird lovers will be amazed by Nyungwe’s over 320 bird species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on Earth. It is considered one of the top bird-watching destinations on the continent.

One of the park’s signature attractions is the Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge 70 meters above the forest floor. It provides breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest canopy, offering a unique perspective on the park’s flora and fauna.

Nyungwe is also rich in botanical diversity, with more than 1,000 plant species, including ancient trees, orchids, giant ferns, and medicinal plants used for generations by local communities.

Besides wildlife, the park offers an extensive network of over 130 kilometers of hiking trails, each leading through ecosystems ranging from bamboo zones to swamp forests, waterfalls, and high-altitude viewpoints.

Nyungwe is not only a natural treasure but also an important conservation area that protects Rwanda’s freshwater systems. The forest feeds two of the world’s largest rivers: the Nile and the Congo, making it a key water catchment for the region.

Whether you are here for wildlife, birdwatching, adventure, photography, or relaxation, Nyungwe offers a deep, immersive nature experience that connects you with one of Africa’s last remaining ancient rainforests.
