Welcome to Lake Kivu – One of Africa’s Great Lakes
allow me to introduce you to Lake Kivu, one of the most breathtaking natural treasures of the African Great Lakes region. Situated along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu is renowned not only for its scenic beauty but also for its geological uniqueness.
Location &
Landscape
Nestled within the Albertine Rift Valley, Lake Kivu is framed by dramatic green
hills, terraced farmlands, and charming lakeside towns such as Rubavu
(Gisenyi), Karongi (Kibuye), and Rusizi (Cyangugu). These destinations
offer some of the most peaceful and picturesque views in Rwanda.
A Volcanic
Wonder
Lake Kivu is a volcanic lake, meaning it sits atop an active geological
zone. Beneath the lake, naturally occurring volcanic activity traps an enormous
amount of methane and carbon dioxide gas. This makes Kivu one of only a
few “exploding lakes” in the world—but modern technology has turned this risk
into an opportunity.
Methane
Extraction Project
Rwanda has successfully developed methane-to-power extraction, one of
the first projects of its kind globally. This innovation helps reduce gas
pressure in the lake—making it safer—while generating clean electricity for the
country. As a guide, I like to call it: “turning danger into energy.”
Tourism &
Attractions
Lake Kivu is not only scientific—it’s wonderfully recreational. Visitors enjoy:
- Boat cruises to discover small islands such as Napoleon Island, famous for its large colony of bats.
- Swimming, thanks to Kivu’s warm and bilharzia-free waters.
- Water sports including kayaking, paddle-boarding, and fishing.
- Relaxation along beautiful sandy beaches in Rubavu.
- Cultural encounters with local fishermen and coffee washing stations near the shores.
Specialty: Kivu
Belt Coffee
The hills around Lake Kivu produce some of Rwanda’s finest coffee. The lake’s
altitude, fertile volcanic soils, and unique microclimate create an ideal
environment for growing high-quality Arabica coffee—perfect for coffee lovers.
A Peaceful
Escape
Whether you’re seeking adventure, cultural experiences, or simply a quiet place
to relax, Lake Kivu offers a serene atmosphere that perfectly complements
Rwanda’s wildlife and mountain tourism.
